If you are new to RIMMAD, I’m Rachel Ireland Meyers, artist and founder of RIMAAD (an acronym for Rachel Ireland Meyers Art and Design). I’m a colour and pattern loving abstract and impressionist painter living in the northern beaches of Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia. I am a lover of beautiful gardens and flowers, nature, wildlife and people. Vincent van Gogh said, “There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people,” and that sentiment has always resonated with me. I love encouraging others to bring both colour and nature into their living and work spaces, and I’m an advocate for living sustainably and embracing the practice of slow living. And, through artwork, I hope to invoke a connection for my viewers while also representing the truest version of myself.
It is much better to indulge in the pursuit of what is beautiful to you than to compromise yourself in praising only the new!
I always love meeting people who follow their hearts, who live in their own spaces and who aren't afraid to tell their own stories. The simple truth is, I adore walking into homes that have soul, layers, the textures of daily life, and a unique blend of new and old (including, second-hand goodies) as well. During our adult years, we rarely spend time talking about our favourite colours, and our personal spaces often exist with no direct indication of the colours that make us feel joyful. How woeful is that? If our homes “truly” work best for us when they reflect what makes us happy, safe and comforted, then shouldn’t we try to explore and inject our own colour palette into our own spaces? So, perhaps we need to spend more time thinking about the colours, patterns and textures that give us joy, and “unapologetically” colour our home environments in palettes that are unique to us.
A little about me …
Over the years, I have crafted a lifestyle surrounding my work, thriving on the strength of many beautiful and amazing people, the support of my family, the beauty of imperfection, the harmony of mental and physical well-being and embracing the natural world. I am fortunate to live my days immersed in a unique and stunning natural environment, often waking to the sound of parrots, cockatoos and the calls of imperial pied pigeons. I am able to look at the vistas of the rainforest and the ocean, and I adore the never-ending landscapes of green. And, my artistic practice today is a response to the colours, textures, energies and composition of my daily life.
I was always creative, and my artistic foundations were established in early childhood where I was surrounded by many artistic minds, especially in my own family. And, my initial art practice began in the areas of commercial art, graphic design and lithography, at a time when everything was hand drawn. I went on to study at both undergraduate, and post-graduate levels, gaining qualifications in Art, History, Philosophy, the Social Sciences, Education and in Public Policy. And, together many of these areas continue to influence my art in one way or another, and I have an imagination that just never stops. I grew up in New Zealand, and have lived in Australia for the past 30 years. I have had many adventures living in Sydney, Melbourne, Western Australia, Tasmania, and now Far North Queensland. You can find my artwork in each state across Australia, and in North America, New Zealand, Europe, the UK and Japan.
