40 Spotted Pardalote

Tasmania’s endemic 40 spot Pardalote is now extremely rare. The eggs and young are preyed upon by introduced sugar gliders and the birds’ preferred habitat is shrinking. I have painted this parent feeding lerps to its juvenile; lerps are a white, sugary excretion from an insect called a psyllid, found on the leaves of the Manna gum. When painting flowers, I am constantly surprised by how many variations of ‘white’ exist!
