In New Zealand winters (where I grew up) there is always a crisp coolness in the skies, when the sun is low and its light covers the landscape with a milkiness, rather than the intense bright light of summer. Daffodils have a special place in my heart, because I grew up in a landscape where they would grow every winter through to spring. It is often said that no colour clashes in nature, and “Five Happy Daffodils,” is simply my own paint-loving interpretation and expression of that. This painting is bright and a whole lot of fun. It is a unique and ‘imperfect’ representation and imbues any space with feelings of warmth, texture, a good splash of pink and gorgeous citrus hues.
